Richmondshire District Council

Introduction

Making plans now will help you to protect your property, as the council cannot commit to always being able to provide sandbags to houses or commercial premises during flooding incidents.

During a flooding incident we have to prioritise our resources and staff welfare. Staff will only be deployed to deliver sandbags if it is deemed safe to do so. Please be aware that if roads become flooded we may be unable to reach your property.

There are several ways to access sandbags during a flooding situation. The quickest way to obtain sandbags is to access one of the various sandbag stores located across the district. A list of local stores can be found on website.

You can collect sandbags from our Depot facility at Borough Road, Richmond, North Yorkshire, DL10 4SX during the normal working hours of 6:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday. Please note access into the Depot yard is restricted, therefore please ring the bell at the front door.

Alternatively if you are unable to collect sandbags we can deliver them to your property. Please note that the council's stock of sandbags will be prioritised to responding to a threat of, or actual flood incidents, in the following areas:

  • Protection of council and domestic properties - a maximum of 6 sandbags per doorway will be provided
  • Commercial premises - a maximum of 20 sandbags will be provided at a cost of £6.00 per bag, if resources are available to do so during normal working hours only.

Please note - sandbags cannot be recollected after the event.

Only request sandbags during a flooding incident.

Sand can be emptied onto your garden and the bags disposed of in your bin.

eForm completion

Please note that if an online request is submitted during a flooding incident, it will not be picked up overnight or during weekends. Only complete this online form request during the normal working hours of 6:30am and 4:30pm, Monday to Friday.

If you are requesting sandbags outside of normal working hours you should contact the Out of Hours Service on 0300 131 2 131. Sandbags will normally only be delivered up to 9pm.

During a flooding incident, we are unable to advise you of a delivery time. Please be assured however that sandbags will be delivered as soon as resources are available and it is safe to do so. Sandbags will be delivered to the front of the property. Positioning sandbags to prevent flooding is the responsibility of the resident.
